I stopped at Bass Pro in Vaughan on the way back from a trip yesterday. They had a rack of Tilley hats, and remembering this thread, I took a very close look at them. They had many models that were manufactured either in Canada, or “responsibly” in China. I bought a nylon Airflo (LTM5) as my classic T3 canvas hat is getting a bit hot after 2 Covid years of no haircuts.

Some of the Airflo hats they had – and specifically, the exact LTM5 model I bought (even the same size), were manufactured in China – and others in Canada. I think there’s still some supply of the Canadian made hats of specific models, that are still being shipped and sold. They weren’t being sold under a S/M/L/XL size scheme but with real, proper hat sizes. I have 7⅝ or 7¾ hat size (my head has its own weather system) so it’s hard to find a hat in my size.

I was able to compare the exact same models, in the exact same size, on a couple of models. I couldn’t see any difference – and I looked

very

close. The Airflo I bought is nylon, but it’s designed as a lightweight hat, so I think this may have always been the case, and not that they cheaped out and changed the canvas to nylon.

I had a look at their website when I got back. They do still make

some

models in Canada:

I know the brand has changed hands at least twice now, and I have the feeling that the original purchaser was of the type that buys established brands and then aggressively cuts costs, but that the second buyer has a better idea of what made Tilley great. Still though, asking the same price for something made in China as something made in Canada is quite the bait and switch, if you ask me. I’ll be watching the brand, but I still hold out some hope for it.
