Do Muck Boots run big?

Muck boots run true to size, though there are interesting points worth knowing. Most Muck boots don’t come in half sizes, so if you’re a half size, you’ll need to go up a size in men’s boots. An additional consideration is a unisex range; for men, a unisex boot still is true to size; but for women, a unisex boot should be one size down from the men’s size.

Muck boots come in various styles, from ankle boots, farm and garden boots, slip-ons, and tall boots. The hint is in the name, Muck boots are excellent for those outdoor, mucky jobs where keeping waterproof and warm is key; and with several styles to choose from, there’s something for every contingency.

And as well as men’s and women’s boots, many Muck boots are also unisex, which are great for customers right up until it comes to picking the correct size. Muck boots are true to size, but there are some pitfalls to their sizing that you need to be aware of.

Because of these gray areas, I’ve put together a comprehensive sizing guide for Muck boots so that all you need to worry about is picking the perfect Muck boot.

Skip Ahead

Muck Boots Sizing Guide

There’s an excellent range of Muck boots available at the Muck Boot Company. With leather boots, tall, ankle, steel toe, and wide calf boots on offer, your only stumbling block might be finding the correct size.

Boots and footwear that are 100% MUCKPROOF: remarkably protective and totally waterproof, made with premium neoprene and rubber, and designed to brave every element.

Key Sizing Information

There are some key points to remember when picking the right Muck boot, as most men’s Muck boots don’t come in half sizes. There’s a small selection of Muck boots in half sizes, but unless you’re lucky enough to find the pair you want there, you’ll need to make the correct sizing choice to get the perfect fit.

Most Muck boots generally only come in full sizes, so if you’re a half size, I recommend going up a size to ensure your boot fits. Muck boots are designed with an additional 15mm of space in the toe to allow freedom of movement, so that may mean going up a size leaves more room than you expected.

Going up a size allows you the flexibility to pad your boot out a little; insoles or thick socks will be a big help here. Going down a size restricts your options, and while Muck boots stretch slightly with wear, the Muck Boot Company themselves recommend a size up.

Regarding the width of a Muck boot, most options come in medium only (or standard D width), so if you know that you have wide feet, going up a size is definitely an option to consider. Many Muck boots are made using flex-foam neoprene, which will contour to your foot, and is flexible enough to stretch.

Flex-foam neoprene has some great features that suit Muck boots perfectly, I’ve found that even with thin socks, the heat retention is excellent, and the boot feels much more comfortable. You’ll also be 100% waterproof, and the flexibility of flex-foam neoprene means that for most boot sizes, you’ll be able to buy your standard size and be perfectly comfortable.

Leather Boots

There’s a limited selection of leather boots available, though there are a few excellent styles to choose from; all come in full sizes and are available in medium width. I love the Men’s Originals Duck Lace boot. It looks great and has a layer of memory foam in the footbed, making wearing them all day a breeze.

The Leather Originals feature a durable rubber shell with a full-grain waterproof leather upper, and hand-laid rubber for flexibility, comfortable, 100% waterproof protection.

Several leather boots also come in a wider size, which is handy if you know you’ll need wide boots. The classic-looking Chore Farm Leather Chelsea boot comes in medium and wide fits and is one of the selections that also comes in half sizes. The Chore Farm Leather Chelsea boot could be a great introduction to Muck boots, especially if your boot needs to be wider.

The Chore Barn Leather collection, tough enough for your worst days – handsome enough for your best.

Tall Boots

With a much more comprehensive range on offer here, Muck’s really come into their own in the tall boot range; 100% waterproof, sturdy, and they look great. Several of the tall boots on offer are also wide calf, which offers even more flexibility when picking out a pair. I’ve also found the ability to be able to roll down the boot, especially in warmer weather, gives me much more flexibility with my Muck boots.

A tall boot is ideal for those mucky outdoor jobs where you need extra protection. The Woody Max Realtree Edge is a superb boot available in medium width only, comes in full sizes, and offers some serious protection when out in the wild.

Woody Max has kept hunters warm and toasty for over a decade with a 5mm neoprene waterproof bootie and fleece liner with the added 2mm thermal foam under foot.

The Men’s Chore Classic Steel Toe Wide Calf boot may be a mouthful to say, but it’s another option for those of us with wide calves whose outdoor work might need steel toe boots. The Chore Classic is another boot that’s only available in medium width and is restricted to full sizes only but offers the added protection that steel toe boots have.

Thanks to its several protective features, the steel toe, shank-constructed Muck Boots Chore Boot is perfectly qualified for construction workers and loggers. Go for this boot if you work long hours, are required to wear steel toe boots, or have big calves.

Ankle Boots

Working outside might not have to mean being knee-deep in mud or water; sometimes, you’re just looking for a smaller boot that’s waterproof and comfortable. The Muck ankle boots are a perfect solution; they’re easy to put on and look great around town on a wet and windy day. The popular Excursion Pro Mid is an excellent example of a stylish yet functional Muck boot.

Ideal for the city commuter, the Excursion Pro will keep you comfortable and dry from wet and slushy conditions.

The Chore Farm Leather Chelsea Comp Toe boot is one of the small selection of Muck boots available in both medium and wide widths and comes in half sizes. If you’re struggling to find a Muck boot that fits perfectly, this could be the boot for you. It’s also a great-looking boot that won’t look out of place heading to the office on a winter’s day.

If the Chore Farm Leather Chelsea boot appeals to you but you want to see what other great Chelsea boots are out there, I think you’ll like our YouTube review on the 5 Best Chelsea Boots For Men 2022, where we look at some of the best Chelsea boots on the market.

Steel Toe Boots

If it’s a waterproof steel toe boot you’re after, the Muck Boot Company has a specific range of boots that has you covered. With styles available in both long boot, and a more classic-looking ankle boot, a pair of Muck’s steel toe boots will keep you safe, dry, and comfortable all day. A breathable mesh lining inside these boots really helps too, allowing your feet to breathe.

The Muck Steel toe collection is only available in medium width and full sizes, so again, if you’re a half size, go up to the next size. The Steel toe range of Muck boots, like the Arctic Pro Steel Toe, are thermal lined, but thick socks will pad out the extra room.

The Arctic Pro Steel Toe is a professional extreme conditions work boot. It keeps you working at your best when mother nature is at her worst.

Muck boots are designed to have around 15mm of wiggle room in the toes, so it’s to be expected that your boot will have room inside for your feet to breathe. The Arctic Pro Steel toe is 100% waterproof, so you may find the more oversized fit stops your feet from overheating in the thermal lining. I know many people use a wool insole if they find their feet sweat in Muck boots.

Wide Calf Boots

Having the correct size boot is crucial, but the fit around the calf is just as important for taller boots. It’s no good your foot fitting like a glove if you can’t get your leg into the boot in the first place. The wide calf range of Muck boots will help those with larger calves find the perfect boot for their needs, and I especially like the Arctic Ice Wide Calf boot.

The Arctic Ice Extended Fit Boot features Arctic Grip technology an 8mm neoprene bootie with fleece lining wrapped in layers of soft rubber with a posterior gusset for a customized fit.

It’s a camouflage-colored boot built with a posterior gusset that allows you to customize the fit and should allow your calf much more space. I’ve found that the wide calf range can also benefit those with normal-size calves; the added space can make tucking your trousers inside your boot much more accessible.

Half Size Selection

Thankfully for us, Muck has put all their boots that come in half sizes in one place for us, so if you’re not happy going up a size, this is the place for you. If you know going up a full size causes you issues, there’s a good selection on offer, although only in the men’s range.

The Outscape Low is an eye-catching slip-on boot that comes in half sizes, though you can also find lace-up boots, Chelsea boots, and tall boots that are available in half sizes too. The Muck Boot Company have made sure that even those styles that don’t look like their usual products stil retain the key features; all are 100% waterproof, and offer great protection from the cold too.

The Muck Outscape was built to provide 100% waterproof performance and versatility for active outdoor work and exploration, no matter if the task at hand is working in the garden, in the barn or out hiking with the dog.

The Men’s Comp Toe Wellie is available in half sizes, but due to popularity can often be missing sizes, so it’s worth checking the availability first. The half-size range is available in medium width, as is standard for Muck boots. If the half size range isn’t for you though, don’t forget to simply buy a size up from your normal boot.

This mid-height full grain leather pull-on is all about standing comfort on hard surfaces.

Tips for Getting the Best Muck Boot Fit

There are three easy steps to follow when it comes to sizing your foot correctly for Muck boots, and all you’ll need is a pencil and a piece of paper. That’s right, we’re going old school, back to basics, measure your actual foot to get the perfect fit. And it’s as simple as it sounds.

1. Get a Piece of Paper

Place the piece of paper on the ground, and place your bare foot on top of it, while gently pushing your weight forwards so that your foot is completely flat to the paper. Some people have one foot longer than the other, so choose your longer foot to measure if that’s the case.

2. Mark Your Toe and Heel

Draw a line directly behind your heel, and then another line directly in front of your longest toe. Note that I say longest toe, and not big toe; it’s not unusual for someone to have a toe slightly longer than their big toe, so always measure the line from the longest toe on that foot.

3. Measure

And finally (I told you this was easy), measure the exact distance between the lines, in either inches or centimeters. Once measured, you’ll have the measurement you need to match up with the Muck boot size guide, which can be found here.

The men’s footwear size chart has the U.S boot size alongside the length of foot, in both inches and centimeters, you simply match the length to the boot size, and away you go. An example size is a U.S size 8 boot corresponding with a 9.9“ or 25.4cm foot length. Once you’ve got your length, you’ve got your size.

Boots and footwear that are 100% MUCKPROOF: remarkably protective and totally waterproof, made with premium neoprene and rubber, and designed to brave every element.

What Type of Socks Should I Wear with Muck Boots?

The Muck company is one of the only retailers that provides a conversion chart for socks, with a guide for which size sock you should ideally wear with your Muck boot. The sock sizes range from Medium (MD), Large (LG), Extra Large (XL), and the mighty XXL (2L), which looks more like a sleeve than a sock.

For Muck boots in men’s sizes 5 – 9.5, Muck recommends a medium sock size for their boots, and for sizes between 9 – 12, you’re ideally looking for a large sock. The thickness of the sock is up to you, just consider whether you’ve had to go up a size or not and the weather conditions you’re expecting. I would go for thick socks if you’re a half size and bought the next boot size up.

For those of us with larger feet, as the saying goes, “You know what they say about men with big feet… big socks”. For Muck boots between the sizes of 12 – 15, you’ll need an XL sock to keep your feet warm and comfortable. And lastly, for those of you with feet that look like flippers, if you’re a 15 – 17 in Muck boot, it’s the 2L sock that will do the trick.

Muck Boots Sizing for Women

Like the men’s selections, Muck boots for women are almost exclusively full sizes, and The Muck Boot Company advises that women who are a half size in footwear should buy the next size down in Muck boots. This is partly because there’s a 15mm allowance built into the toe of a Muck boot, so going up a size may prove too large.

Another critical point regarding the proper sizing for women’s Muck boots is that many Muck boots are unisex. If you’ve set your heart on a pair of Muck boots that either specifically say unisex or are in the men’s range, you can just go down a size, and the fit should be fine. The Muck Company advises women to simply order a size down from the men’s size shown.

You can find the Muck boot sizing conversion chart for women as well as the recommended sock sizes for women’s boots here; if you need more information, the company has tried to cover all eventualities, but as long as you remember the above rules, you won’t go far wrong.

Muck Boots Size Chart

The best way to find your sizing for Muck Boots is to compare to other brands like I’ve done throughout this guide.

But it may also help to get a comparison in inches. There’s a lot more to boot sizing than the length of your foot, so don’t go solely off of this size chart. But if you’re still feeling a little lost, this guide should hopefully help you rule out the wrong sizes.

And if you normally shop in EU or UK sizes, you can also convert those sizes to US so you don’t end up with an oversized boot.

Conclusion

Muck boots are perfect for outdoor work, especially in less than ideal conditions. Even though many of the styles on offer only come in full sizes, the fact that Muck boots are true to size makes buying the right boot easy. Muck boots expand well to fit; and going up a size if you’re a half size solves most fitting issues for men’s Muck boots.

The Leather Originals feature a durable rubber shell with a full-grain waterproof leather upper, and hand-laid rubber for flexibility, comfortable, 100% waterproof protection.
