How far can it hang?

I have a canoe I want to take up to my buddies place and it hangs out the bed quite a bit. I know I can secure it safely and have more than enough straps to do so. I also understand I’ll have to attached a red flag for visibility.
My question: how far out of the bed can something hang? I’m in Illinois and the answer is less than easy to find. I tried calling the police station but they are closed for general inquires.
Any body have an idea?

flag it and cross your fingers it isn’t too long?! I have done that in Canada but not for a long distance or on major roads. Up here the red flag is the big thing. My kayaks go on a rack in the bed and overhang the back by a couple feet. I think the law for us is 24″ past the rear most part of the vehicle then a flag is required.

That’s a great pic! I’m going to go with… not that far!
You have any of those foam blocks that clip onto the sides of the canoe? I’m not sure I’d rest it on the back edge of my roof, but I’d think a few of those foam blocks would support it on your roof just fine. Then tie the front & back to the front tow hooks and the trailer hitch.
Good luck,

Just don’t put it on an angle from the bed up and over the roof…. if you try to go down the highway it’s likely bad things will happen aside from horrible fuel economy…
I’d try to get some pads or something and put it mostly on the roof so it can lay horizontal, similar to how would you on an SUV or something.

I could buy those swimming pool fun noodles, I’d like to stay away from putting anything in my roof but i may not have an option.

The roof mounted option is also a good idea. Some people I’ve seen buy cheap pool noodles as cushions to protect your roof.
I know here in Canada alot of places that sell fishing equipment also sell the padded mounts and the gear to go with it for kayaks and canoes when strapping them down to a roof with no roof rack… they are relatively cheap too I believe, say under $30.00

Question, is this a one time thing, or is something
At least this route splits the distance better, and prob a bit safer ( if installed right and assuming sturdy materials.)
