Lew Childre is a name that resonates with anglers, especially those who remember the great Speed Stick rods and Speed Spool reels that the late Alabama fishing tackle maven designed and sold back in the ’70s. The brand name is now under new ownership and represented by a wide assortment of rods and reels. Four series of rods are available, from the top-of-the-line Team Lew’s Speed Stick graphite casting and spinning models ($239.99) to the Tournament Pro Speed Stick ($179.99 to $199.99) and Tournament Graphite Speed Sticks ($109.99 to $159.99), and the workhorse Lew’s SG Graphite Speed Stick ($79.99 to $129.99). Blank-through handles, premium cork, Fuji hardware and open-ended hook keepers are among the features.

On the reel side, there’s the 7.1-ounce Team Lew’s Speed Spool baitcaster ($279.99) with its one-piece die-cast frame and sideplates, the 6.7-ounce Tournament Pro Speed Spool ($199.99), the 8.3-ounce Tournament Speed Spool ($149.99) and the basic Speed Spool (8.1 ounces and a price of $99.99). The more expensive models have high-grade bells and whistles such as Duralumin drive trains, but all the reels are available with varying gear ratios and the distinctive paddle reel handles that typified the original Lew’s Speed Spools. The two spinning models include the carbon fiber-bodied Tournament Speed Spool ($89) and the basic Speed Spin ($59). (lews.com)
