Tapcons into New Concrete

I just poured footers for a small deck (9’x12′) The beams are resting directly on the concrete, and I plan on using tapcons to secure some bracing to resist shear movement. My questions is… How long do i need to wait for the concrete to cure before tapcons will cut a thread? I have tried to find info on the tapcon site without any luck. Thanks in advance.

Most of the strength comes after the first 7-14 days. Take a look concrete curing strength over time and correlate that to the concrete strength you installed and then what you feel comfortable with.

General Rule is 28 days on concrete being cured to drill holes or set anchors – might have set bolt anchors in the pour to secure your wood with…

Thanks! I know the rule is 28days, but of course I was hoping it would work sooner. I thought about sinking anchors, but need flexibility on positioning. Appreciate the reply.

Tapcons are fine. I would set them after 24 hours, if it was me. If you know where the beams will be you can set a piece of allthread with some Hilti HIT-HY 100 adhesive, just clean out the hole good. Sounds like a fun project, please post as you build 🙂

How big are the footings? Do the tapcons meet code for shear? I’d wait two weeks for a bigger pour, but either way once the pilots are drilled blow/vac any dust out and use some epoxy/adhesive when screwing the tapcons, enough to have it ooze out just a bit once tapcons are fully screwed in

Depends how much concrete there is to cure, but a small fitting should be good the next day.

  • concrete is green for 7-21 days and could be longer based on curing and pour temps.

  • I would hesitate to use with any concrete anchor for at least 2 weeks that requires the concrete for connection otherwise you will blow the holes out with attempting to anchor. Concrete has zero tensile strength that tapcons require when its not fully cured
