This only pertains to before obtaining my CCW, just signed up for the class. Until then, the wording on this law can be a little confusing.

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f…ctionNum=25640.

25640.

Section 25400 does not apply to, or affect, licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers, or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition.

It states we are allowed to conceal a firearm while hunting or fishing and the ending mentioned being unloaded. Depending on how you read it, it seems as though you can either have a loaded gun on you while fishing or hunting and then unload it when traveling to and from, or you can have a gun in you but it must be unloaded at all times. Wouldn’t it being unloaded defeat the purpose of having one in the first place? The “, or transporting” makes it seem as though it is lawful to carry a concealed weapon that is loaded while in the act of hunting or fishing, only to be unloaded when TRAVELING. It would be great to hear your thoughts on this. It will be much easier once I can get my permit haha.

While fishing the freshwater streams of Northern California my father carried a S&W J-frame model 36 and later a stainless model 60 concealed with 3-rounds of .38 Special snake shot and 2-rounds of 130 gr. FMJ Ball ammo, from the late 1950’s well into the 1990’s he never went fishing without it.

This is my Dad in about 1958 probably in the Eel, Mad or Van Duzen river and I can assure you he’s armed with his revolver…I sure miss you, Pop…

Side note, If you’ve ever wondered why California game wardens are a little jumpy it might be because every sportsman/woman they come in contact with can potentially be legally armed with a concealed handgun.

If you’re wetting line, load the gun; if you’re heading to or from the stream, unload it. DFW officers like easy citations.

And, don’t lean your guns against, or lay them on, the vehicle while on the roadway. Post

If you have a valid CA fishing license…

… it is legal to conceal carry an unloaded handgun while traveling to and from your fishing site.

… it is legal to conceal carry an unloaded handgun while fishing in an area that prohibits the discharge of firearms.

… it is legal to conceal carry a loaded handgun while fishing in an area that does not prohibit the discharge of firearms.

It is legal to open carry a loaded firearm or an unloaded firearm in an area where it is legal to discharge firearms.

It is legal to open carry an unloaded antique firearm.

Therefore…

This would be CA legal method of carrying, as a person with a valid CA fishing license and fishing in a place where it is legal to discharge firearms:

1. Exit residence and foot travel to vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

2. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

3. Exit vehicle and foot travel to fishing site = unloaded conceal carry.

4. At fishing site, while fishing = loaded conceal carry.

5. Foot travel from fishing site to vehicle = unloaded conceal carry.

6. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

7. Exit vehicle and foot travel to residence = unloaded in locked container.

This would be CA legal method of carrying, as a person with a valid CA fishing license and fishing in a place where it is illegal to discharge firearms:

1. Exit residence and foot travel to vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

2. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

3. Exit vehicle and foot travel to fishing site = unloaded conceal carry.

4. At fishing site, while fishing = unloaded conceal carry.

5. Foot travel from fishing site to vehicle = unloaded conceal carry.

6. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

7. Exit vehicle and foot travel to residence = unloaded in locked container.

HUNTING

If you have a valid CA hunting license…

… it is legal to conceal carry an unloaded handgun or open carry an unloaded handgun while traveling to and from your hunting site.

… it is legal to conceal carry a loaded handgun or open carry a loaded handgun while hunting in an area that does not prohibit the discharge of firearms.

It is legal to open carry a loaded firearm or an unloaded firearm in an area where it is legal to discharge firearms.

This would be CA legal method of carrying, as a person with a valid CA hunting license and hunting in a place where it is legal to discharge firearms:

1. Exit residence and foot travel to vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

2. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

3. Exit vehicle and foot travel to hunting site = unloaded conceal carry or unloaded open carry.

4. At hunting site, while hunting = loaded conceal carry or loaded open carry.

5. Foot travel from hunting site to vehicle = unloaded conceal carry or unloaded open carry.

6. While in vehicle = unloaded in locked container.

7. Exit vehicle and foot travel to residence = unloaded in locked container.
