Butt-Chugging, Alcohol Enema Effects, Harmful Risks & More

Butt chugging is when someone ingests alcohol through their rectum to feel stronger and faster effects as the alcohol bypasses the regular digestive system. It is formally known as an “alcohol enema.” Continue to read more about how dangerous butt-chugging is and why many still try it.

What is Butt-Chugging?

An alcohol enema is precisely what it sounds like. Butt-chugging or boofing, formally known as “Alcohol Enema,” is pouring alcoholic beverages into your rectum area. Since the rectum area is thin with numerous blood cells, it gives more accessible access to your bloodstream than consuming alcohol orally. Other terms to call butt-chugging are “boofing” and “plugging.”

Alcohol enema, butt-chugging, or boofing introduces alcoholic drinks through the anus into the rectum. The bypass of the first pass metabolic effect of the rectal absorption of ethanol allows a higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and, consequently, tremendous potential for central nervous system depression. There’s the lack of the body’s ability to throw away the toxin by vomiting. Furthermore, the recent increase in complications of alcohol enema overuse and abuse is due to the popularity of various erotic practices and sexual exploration.

What is a butt chug? When boofing involves alcohol, it is often referred to as butt-chugging or an alcohol enema. Butt chugging is when someone ingests alcohol through their rectum to feel stronger and faster effects as the alcohol bypasses the regular digestive system.

What is Boofing? What is Boofed?

Why do people do it — and how? Could it be a clever way to avoid a hangover? What’s the worst that could happen? Read on for a deep dive into the answers to these (and several other) questions about butt-chugging. These unconventional ways of alcohol assumption are shared in social media and seem to be a new and hazardous trend.

Almost one-third of the US adult population consumes enough alcoholic beverages to cause or put them at risk of damaging consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [1], nearly 5% of the US population drinks heavily, and 15% engage in risky, binge drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems.

Most binge drinkers are not alcohol dependent and often engage in this health-risk behavior without realizing the problems associated with drinking excessively. Irresponsible behaviors such as mixing alcohol with prescription drugs or ingesting alcohol through the rectum increase the effects of alcohol and can pose even more significant risks than binge drinking.

What Is The Urban Dictionary Boofing Definition?

Boofing is slang for anal sex. However, the term boof drugs can also refer to putting alcohol or drugs up one’s butt to intoxicate because that’s a thing. Boofing was popularized during the 1980s, a decade in which it made multiple pop culture appearances. It appears to come from butt-f_ck, shortened to bu-fu and then boof. Bu-fu appeared in rock legend Frank Zappa’s 1982 Valley Girl. At one point in the song, the stereotypical valley girl sings about her teacher, whom she calls Mr. Bu-Fu.

Terms used to describe alcohol plugging or boofing include:

  • Butt-chugging
  • Alcohol enemas
  • Boofing or boofed
  • Rectal alcohol use
  • Rectal administration

What is Boofed (Butt Plug)?

Wondering what is boofed? Boofed means to “butt plug” or insert a drug or alcohol into the anus rather than injecting it intravenously. Typically, addicts refer to the term “boofed” when their needle broke or they did not have one and resort to boofed drugs or alcohol. Boofed drugs and alcohol are not as powerful as injecting or shooting up drugs, into the bloodstream. Injecting drugs gives a stronger and faster high than snorting them.

How Butt-Chugging is Done?

It is unclear when alcohol enemas or butt chugging first occurred or how often they are used. However, this seems to be a dangerous new trend, particularly among college students. How to butt chug? A tube is inserted into the rectum, and alcohol is poured directly into the colon, enhancing the amount and speed of the alcohol entering the bloodstream as it bypasses the initial filtering by the liver. Some participants may be unaware that this practice prevents vomiting and hangovers; others cannot ingest ethanol orally because of painful gastrointestinal ailments.

But how does it get it in there? The process usually entails lying down on your back with your knees in the air and a funnel inserted in your rear end. The alcohol is poured into the funnel, which gets it into your system. Some people require some help with the mechanics, but others do it solo. As an alternative to the funnel, some people use medical enema bags, like the ones used to relieve constipation. Others report inserting a tampon soaked in alcohol into their rectum (boofing alcohol tampon, alcohol tampon in anus, or alcohol enema tampon).

While it may seem harmless, there are several dangers of butt-chugging alcohol. Because of the fast absorption rate, the effects of boofing are also magnified and more intense.

Alcohol Enema or Butt-Chugging or Boofing

Fact Sheet

Using an alcohol enema involves placing a small tube into someone’s rectum and pouring alcohol into the colon. Because the alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, the recipient gets drunk faster.

Our stomachs and livers have an enzyme known as alcohol dehydrogenase that breaks down ethanol to make it less toxic for our bodies. The lower gastrointestinal tract doesn’t have that enzyme, so alcohol molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream through the colon lining.

Eventually, the alcohol would still make its way to the liver, but the high alcohol content would overwhelm the organ. “It’s extremely dangerous.”

Compared to drinking, alcohol intoxication begins far more quickly upon rectal consumption since the alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. The lower gastrointestinal tract lacks the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme in the stomach and liver that breaks down ethanol into acetylaldehyde, which is more toxic than ethanol (drinking alcohol) and is responsible for most chronic effects of ethanol. When rectally absorbed, ethanol will eventually arrive at the liver, but the high alcohol content could overwhelm the organ. Furthermore, consuming the alcohol rectally neutralizes the body’s ability to reject the toxin by vomiting.

Butt chug lean enables these substances to enter directly into your system. Inert the butt chug lean cocktail of substances enables the user to get higher with a small amount of cough syrup. Be warned, ass chugging lean can be dangerous.

Does Butt Chugging Get You Drunk?

Butt chugging (anal.chugging) is becoming increasingly popular. It involves ingesting alcohol using an enema. Is chugging alcohol dangerous? It is dangerous because alcohol passes into the bloodstream more quickly than if consumed orally. There have been reports of severe alcohol poisoning symptoms resulting from butt chugging at many colleges and universities.

It won’t be successful if you try to use butt chugging as a defense for a DUI charge (under O.C.G.A. section 40-6-391). The prosecution must show that the driver was less safe due to consuming alcohol or drugs to secure a conviction for DUI.

The way that alcohol or narcotics are consumed is not specified by law. The prosecution must prove the presence of alcohol or drugs in your body. There are several methods to get alcohol or drugs into the system besides drinking. The legal need for alcohol to be ingested orally to be charged with DUI is unquestionably false.

What is Boofing Alcohol? What is Boofed?

What is anal chugging? Alcohol boofing is an alcoholic enema called butt-chugging or plugging. It is a method of ingesting alcohol through the rectum. This usually involves a funnel, but it can also be conducted by inserting tampons saturated with alcoholic beverages. Regarding boofing alcohol, there are some additional concerns around alcohol poisoning. First, unlike the digestive system, the anus doesn’t have enzymes to break down alcohol.

This means the effects of alcohol are felt all at once as it’s broken down in the intestines. Plus, the body has no defense against alcohol poisoning when absorbed in this way. So, if someone may begin to vomit if they’ve had too much to drink, with boofing, the digestive system has been bypassed so that that natural bodily response doesn’t happen.

Alcohol Enema Side Effects

An anal alcohol enema or consuming alcohol up your butt may lead to near-immediate intoxication. This can cause a range of mental, physical, and behavioral effects.

Butt-chugging alcohol may cause the following side effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Decreased coordination and balance
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Slowed reflexes
  • Confusion
  • Memory problems
  • Poor judgment
  • Mood changes
  • Feeling of warmth

The intensity of these side effects of alcohol enema may vary according to factors such as weight, age, alcohol tolerance, and co-occurring health conditions. Alcohol enema or butt-chugging alcohol can cause damage to the colon, rectal tissues, intestinal damage, and potentially cause brain damage. Stunted brain development from alcohol and brain damage from excessive drinking is a high risk for young adults under 25. In addition, butt-chugging alcohol into the rectum may damage the tissue and membranes around the rectum, which can make the body more vulnerable to infections and diseases.

Can You Get Drunk by Putting Alcohol in Your Anus?

No one is sure when alcohol enemas first appeared on social media or how frequently they’re being used. In 2004, a Texas man died after his wife gave him a sherry enema, causing his blood alcohol concentration to increase to 0.47. Many young adults believe butt-chugging alcohol (putting alcohol in butt) will reduce the chance that they’ll experience a hangover. That makes it all the more dangerous because your body can’t reject the toxin.

People can still become addicted to alcohol when consuming it in the rectum. You might develop a higher tolerance to alcohol much faster. Moreover, butt-chugging alcohol can also be life-threatening if you use too much substance or have a very low tolerance for alcohol. Plugging drugs, including alcohol, can be dangerous.

What is Boofing Drugs?

What is butt chug? Butt chugg, boofing drugs, sometimes also called plugging drugs, is the process of inserting alcohol or drugs into the anus to achieve a more instantaneous high. Because the anal cavity has many blood vessels and a thinner surface layer, substances inserted into this area are absorbed quicker than oral consumption. Individuals can boof alcohol or several different drugs, including MDMA and cocaine, but there are several dangers of butt-chugging or boofing drugs – it could even be deadly.

How to Boof Drugs?

Boofing might seem intimidating or unappealing to a lot of people. However, someone addicted to a drug might want to hide some side effects of other drug use methods. This prompts them to try boofing.

To boof, you may need:

  • A clean shot glass or small cup for mixing
  • A syringe
  • Sterile water
  • Something to stir with
  • Vitamin E capsules
  • Petroleum jelly or another type of lubricant
  • A scale for measuring drug dosage
  • Some people keep a second drug on hand to reverse a possible overdose

The process of boofing includes the following steps:

  1. Begin with a bowel movement to avoid messy complications
  2. Carefully plan your dosage – most people start small, even if they’re experienced drug users – and the amount of water you’ll dilute the drug with
  3. Pour the water into the mixing cup
  4. Add and dissolve the drug in the water
  5. Fill and prepare the syringe
  6. Lay on your back, side, or stomach, or stand with one leg raised
  7. Insert the syringe in your anus about a centimeter deep and release the plunger of the syringe
  8. Once empty, remove the needle and dispose of it

Some people insert the vitamin E tablet following the removal of the syringe. They believe it helps repair the tiny lacerations caused by the process.

Side Effects of Butt-Chugging/Boofing

Butt-chugging may lead to near-immediate intoxication. This can cause a range of mental, physical, and psychological effects.

Butt-chugging alcohol may cause the following side effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Decreased coordination and balance
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Slurred speech
  • Slowed reflexes
  • Confusion
  • Memory problems
  • Poor judgment
  • Mood changes
  • Feeling of warmth

The intensity of these side effects may differ according to factors such as weight, age, alcohol tolerance, and co-occurring health conditions.

Dangers of Butt-Chugging/Boofing

Butt-chugging is no laughing matter, experts say. Officials said that one of the Tennessee college students was taken to the hospital with a blood-alcohol level of 0.40. That’s five times the legal limit and what doctors call the “death zone” for alcohol poisoning. Eventually, the alcohol would still make its way to the liver, but the high alcohol content would overwhelm the organ, and it’s hazardous.

Buttchugging can feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re not used to having things inserted into your anus. You might feel a burning sensation in your anus or need a bowel movement (even if you don’t). It’s also worth noting that alcohol can sting. Imagine rubbing it onto a paper cut. This can cause pain in the delicate skin of your anus and lead to inflammation of your intestines (a condition called colitis), which can cause cramping.

Greater Risk of Overdose & Alcohol Poisoning

Butt-chugging may increase the chances of contracting a sexually transmitted infection as the mucous membrane that can protect from STIs becomes damaged. Repeated cases of boofing increase these chances.

The greatest danger of butt-chugging comes with an increased risk of drug or alcohol overdosing because the effects hit you much faster and harder than usual. Some people may take the regular dosage they would use for oral administration without realizing it is too much. Since boofing is relatively newer and hasn’t been extensively studied, there are no well-defined dosages of drugs to avoid overdosing.

With alcohol specifically, alcohol poisoning is a scary possibility. [2]Drinking usually allows you to consume alcohol over several hours and monitor how you feel. If you are boofing alcohol, you will do it in one go, and the effects will hit you all at once. By consuming alcohol through the rectum, you have also decreased your body’s ability to fight alcohol poisoning. Your anus does not have the enzymes to break down the alcohol, and you no longer have the ability to throw up the toxic substance to eliminate it from your body.

Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

Call for emergency medical help right away if you or someone else experiences any of the following symptoms after ingesting alcohol (anally or orally):

  • Sickness and vomiting
  • Clammy skin
  • Pale or bluish skin color
  • Slow heart rate
  • Slow and irregular breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute or 10 or more seconds between breaths)
  • Mental confusion and dulled responses
  • Low body temperature
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness

Risk of Organ Damage and Infections

Alcohol plugging can cause damage to the colon, rectal tissues, intestinal damage, and potentially cause brain damage. Stunted brain development from alcohol and brain damage from excessive drinking is a high risk for young adults under 25.

Butt-chugging alcohol into the rectum may damage the tissue and membranes around the rectum, which can make the body more vulnerable to infections and diseases. If you’re sharing plugging equipment, failing to lubricate the equipment properly, or inserting the alcohol improperly, this can increase the risk of developing infections and causing rectal or colon damage.

Treatment for Alcohol Butt-Chugging/Boofing & Addiction

Alcohol butt-chugging can be a sign of alcohol use disorder, which may require professional treatment. When a person has uncontrolled and problematic drinking, he or she may have a health condition called alcohol use disorder (AUD), commonly known as alcoholism.

According to NIAAA [3], the latest science shows that alcohol use disorder (AUD) can cause lasting changes in the brain. That’s why a health professional best treats AUD. The good news is that effective treatment can help the brain heal while giving people with alcohol problems the skills and support they need to recover.

If you’re struggling with alcohol or drug abuse: you’re not alone. Alcohol and drug abuse treatment programs integrate medical care with behavioral healthcare to address the root causes of substance use disorder and its effects on your health and well-being.

Treatment options for alcohol abuse include:

  • Alcohol detox
  • Inpatient alcohol rehab programs
  • Substance abuse counseling
  • 12-Step programs
  • Support groups

Two main components of professionally led treatment

Healthcare professionals provide two types of treatment for alcohol use disorder:

  • Talk therapy. A licensed therapist can help people build coping strategies and skills to stop or reduce drinking. Treatment can include one-on-one, family, or group sessions. Talk therapy may include:
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – is an effective treatment that involves changing both the patterns of negative thoughts and the behavioral routines which are affecting the daily life of the depressed person for various forms of depression.
    • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – is a comprehensive mental health and substance abuse treatment program whose ultimate goal is to aid patients in their efforts to build a life worth living. The main goal of DBT is to help a person develop what is referred to as a “clear mind.”
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT). A primary care clinician or a board-certified addiction doctor can prescribe non-addicting medications. These can help people stop drinking and avoid relapses.

Searching for an Accredited Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center Near You?

Alcohol is the most abused addictive substance in America, as more than 17 million people in the United States are considered to suffer from addiction to alcohol. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) publishes that over 1.5 million American adults are currently abusing a prescription drug.

To determine the most effective ways to treat individuals with moderate to severe alcohol use disorder, it’s crucial to get an accurate assessment of all the symptoms. When a mental health professional has evaluated the symptoms, it may be determined that another form of mental condition is present and needs a particular treatment. Very often, some combination of psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes are effective for coping with functional.

5 Most Popular Butt-Chugging Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can you get drunk from butt chugging vodka?

Yes. Because the butt chugged vodka is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, the recipient gets drunk faster.

  2. What does butt chugging beer do?

Once in your rectum, the alcohol is absorbed through the mucus membranes. College individuals enjoy this method of butt chug beer because it increases the speed that alcohol enters the bloodstream, thereby quickening the process of getting drunk.

  3. Why young individuals are butt chugging cough syrup?

Opioids, such as codeine and hydrocodone, are often used in prescription cough medications to suppress cough. When one butt chugs cough syrup containing opioids, it’ll be absorbed into the bloodstream quicker. When misused in butt chugging, these opioids produce quicker “high” effects. Leading to more harmful drug addiction and overdose risks.

  4. Is butt chug lean a real thing?

Yes. Lean is an illicit substance made with Codeine, containing cough syrup, soda, hard candy, occasionally alcohol, and an antihistamine. Ass chugging lean makes the substances go directly into your system is real for some individuals trying this method. They can get much higher off a small amount of cough syrup, but it’s hazardous.

  5. What are the side effects of butt chugging lean?

Because of the fast absorption rate, the effects of boofing alcohol and drugs are also magnified and more intense. People should take smaller doses than average for this reason, but many people may not realize this. The sad result is that many people will overdose from boofing and could die without immediate medical attention.
