3. At Winter Haven, Lake Howard has been producing specks. Bluegill and shellcracker are still being caught from the canals, but they’re not producing any specks just yet, reports Schelfo. Anglers are limiting out on specks in several hours while drifting minnows offshore around the Hourglass area, reports Chuck Metheney at Bridgemaster Fishing Products (863-676-1009).

8. At Lake Toho, plenty of bass are being caught on artificials, with a 3- to 4-pound fish here and there. Topwaters at first light, then plastic worms, speedworms and Senkos fished on the edges of the hydrilla are best. The guides are getting bass 4 to 6 pounds and plenty of schoolies on shiners in open water and along the hydrilla, reports Mark Detweiler at Big Toho Marina (407-846-2124).

In the phosphate pits near Mulberry and Bartow, a few bass remain out on the rocks, humps, ledges and points in 8 to 12 feet of water, but they’re starting to push up shallow into the cattails, buggywhips, and cover on the hard banks.
